Long written off by many as incurably right-wing, the American working class is beginning to stir. November 2015 saw the re-election of Socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant in Seattle with over 17,000 votes, while left wing senator Bernie Sanders has been packing meetings of thousands up and down the country.
On top of this the movement of fast food and retail workers for a living wage of $15 an hour and the Black Lives Matter movement against police violence makes for exciting times in the centre of global capitalism.
Socialist Alternative member and Sawant election campaign organiser Patrick Ayers will be speaking in Birmingham at 7:30pm on Tuesday 19th January in the top floor of The Wellington in The City Centre. This should be an excellent chance to hear someone talk from first hand experience about the struggles listed above, as well as likely developments to come in the USA. There will also be a chance to ask questions and find out how to get involved in building support for Socialism in the UK.
